O-Rings & Seals
O-Rings and Custom Rubber Seals
Discuss O-rings and sealing profiles for your assembly. Material, groove dimensions, motion, pressure and service medium guide the review, from a reference size to a custom molded seal.
01 / O-Rings & Seals
Start with the seal and the mating parts
For a standard-size O-ring, provide the size designation and its referenced system. For a custom seal, share the section drawing and mating geometry. RubberQ reviews the compound, molding and inspection requirements together, including small precision parts whose handling and assembly need particular attention.

Prepare the drawing and supply requirements
The installed interface defines more than the free dimensions of the seal. Include the current drawing revision and identify the characteristics that control assembly or function.
| Input | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Inside diameter, cross-section or full profile, tolerances and drawing revision |
| Interface | Groove, mating gap, surface condition and assembly method |
| Duty | Static, reciprocating or rotating service; stroke or speed where relevant |
| Material | Compound reference or required properties, hardness method and contact media |
| Supply | Sample and production quantities, delivery pattern, packaging and lot records |
| Acceptance | Dimensional and visual criteria, sampling and assembly checks |

Identify the actual seal construction
A square-section ring, X-profile, joined ring, encapsulated ring and rubber-to-metal part describe different constructions. Send a drawing or clear reference rather than relying on a product name. Construction-specific manufacturability and supply need review. For bulk orders, distinguish finished seals from uncured compound supply.
04 / O-Rings & Seals
Describe pressure, temperature and media together
Include pressure peaks and changes, extrusion gaps and support, temperature limits and dwell periods. Hardness alone does not determine pressure capability. Identify the complete working fluid and cleaning sequence: coolant, dye solution, water treatment chemicals or a specific ATF need their actual composition and exposure history. For a liquid-cooling quick connector, describe connection actions, installation and the assembled leak check. For prolonged static pressure or high-temperature service, specify the exposure duration, retained-force or leakage criterion and the evidence required for the intended maintenance interval.
05 / O-Rings & Seals
Define movement, friction and contamination
Provide the counterface, lubrication, load, speed, temperature and standing time for a dynamic seal. State whether the concern is linear starting force, running friction or rotary torque. For dust exclusion, include rod diameter, lip interface, stroke and the actual contamination. Agree the measurement and component trial rather than selecting a compound from one friction figure.
- Record the conditions before a start or restart.
- Evaluate the movement and lubricant representative of the application.
- Compare the observed result with an agreed functional criterion.

Agree inspection and sample approval
For miniature seals, discuss measurement support, sampling, handling, packaging and fit in the actual assembly. Identify the compound and sample lot in reports. Agree which characteristics are checked, by what method and at what frequency before repeat supply; an enquiry for a small part does not establish a universal minimum size or all-piece inspection.
Questions about your project
Can you review a non-standard O-ring?
Send the dimensions or drawing, required quantity and service conditions. We will review the geometry, material and tooling requirements.
Can an FFKM seal replace an existing seal?
A replacement requires a review of the original specification, geometry and operating conditions, followed by agreed validation. See our FFKM replacement review page.
